How Salvage Yards Calculate the Actual Cash Value of a Junk Car

Are you looking to sell your junk car? If so, it’s important to understand how salvage yards calculate the actual cash value (ACV) of a junk car. Junk cars can be worth anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to thousands of dollars depending on their condition and market value. Knowing how much your junk car is actually worth will help you get the best deal when selling it to a junkyard or private buyer.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss what factors determine the actual cash value of a scrap vehicle, plus provide tips for getting the most out of your junk car sale.

Calculating Actual Cash Value (ACV)

One of the main factors that junk car buyers consider when determining the actual cash value is the year, make, and model of your vehicle. Depending on the age, condition, and popularity of your car, it could be worth more or less than other vehicles. Additionally, its current market value will also affect how much you can get for it. A vehicle that is in high demand will likely fetch a higher price than one that is less popular.

Another factor that many Louisville junk car buyers look at is the condition of your vehicle. If it’s still running and in good shape, you may be able to get more for it than if it’s not running or has major structural damage. The presence of any aftermarket features, such as a new transmission or upgraded stereo system, will also increase the actual cash value.

Finally, junk car buyers may also take into account any missing parts when calculating the actual cash value. Depending on the part, it could cost more to replace it than what’s offered by the buyer, so be sure to check what parts are missing before selling your junk car.

Consider the Various Factors That Impact ACV

The actual cash value of a junk car can vary significantly depending on several factors, such as its year, make and model, condition, current market value, and any aftermarket features or missing parts. Knowing how much your vehicle is worth will help you get the best possible deal when selling it to a junk car buyer in Louisville. With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to maximize the value of your sale and get the most out of your junk car.

Finally, by selling a junk car you are helping to reduce the amount of waste in landfills and other areas. Many parts of the vehicle can be recycled and reused after it is sold, which helps to reduce the strain on our environment.

Selling a junk car may not be at the top of your list of priorities, but it can provide some serious advantages for you and the environment. If you have an old car lying around that no longer works, consider selling it to get money back, reclaim space, and help preserve the environment.

Check These 6 Automotive Fluid Levels in Your Car Right Now

Part of being a safe driver is taking good care of your car. A car that is well-maintained and properly serviced will perform better, and therefore, keep you and your passengers safer. An important element of best practice car care is automotive fluid management. Your vehicle, no matter which make or model, requires at least 6 essential fluids for optimal performance and safety. These fluids are so important that you should get up right now and check your vehicle’s levels!

Continue below to learn which automotive fluids are the most essential and should be checked on a routine basis.

Junk Car Buying Company Louisville Kentucky 502-804-5605
Junk Car Buying Company Louisville Kentucky 502-804-5605

6 Essential Automotive Fluids to Check Regularly

The 6 most important automotive fluids that you should check on a weekly and monthly basis include motor oil, radiator fluid (coolant/anti-freeze), transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield wiper fluid. In some cases, for vehicles that apply, you will need to address differential fluid levels and battery fluid levels too.

Motor Oil

Also known as engine oil, this automotive fluid might arguably be the most important. Without it, your car simply will not run. Checking your motor oil levels easy and refilling the oil in your car is even easier. You will need to refer to your owners’ manual for instructions on locating the oil dipstick under the hood of your car. It should be clearly labeled and easy to find. This is the rod that will show you where your motor oil levels are at.

The lower down the rod the motor oil residue is, the less you have. Simply pull it out, wipe it with a cloth, then insert it back in. Then pull it out for inspection. You want the dipstick to be at least halfway covered in oil when you pull it back out. You should have your oil changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, or whenever your manual recommends.

Coolant

Your vehicle’s engine gets hot; so hot, that it can damage the internal components and mechanism within the motor and other areas of the vehicle. To regulate engine temperatures, your car relies on radiator fluid, also known as coolant or antifreeze. If your car engine overheats, it is likely due to a low level of coolant. Fortunately, checking and refilling your radiator fluid is just as easy as checking your oil. Simply refer to your owners’ manual for instructions on locating and refiling your coolant reservoir.

Transmission Fluid

Automatic cars use transmission fluid, which basically works as an internal lubricant to keep the gears shifting smoothly. Without proper transmission fluid levels, your car will begin to experience stress within the transmission system. You might notice slowed or struggling acceleration, shaking, or loud idling.

Checking your transmission fluid levels is the same as checking your oil, expect you do it while the car is running. There should be another dipstick somewhere under the hood of your car. Refer to your owners’ manual for specific instructions unique to your make and model. It is recommended to change your transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, or every 3 years, whichever comes first.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is probably the second most important automotive fluid because it supports the ability to stop your car from driving. Having low brake fluid levels will result in delayed braking, brake squealing, and all sorts of other poor brake performance issues. To check brake fluid levels, be sure your engine is off and completely cool. Refer to your owners’ manual for instructions on locating the brake fluid reservoir. After today, check your brake fluid once per year.

Power Steering Fluid

Most cars require power steering fluid. If you notice that your steering wheel is getting harder to control, you could be low on fluid. Refer to your owners’ manual for instructions on locating the power steering reservoir, which is usually on the passenger side of the engine. Be sure the engine is off and cold before checking your fluid levels. Your owners’ manual may recommend differently, but the general rule of thumb for changing out power steering fluid is once every 2 to 3 years.

Windshield Wiper Fluid

Most often forgotten or overlooked, windshield wiper fluid is an essential part of driver and passenger safety. This is a fluid anyone can re-fill themselves, as needed. Simply by this well-known blue solution at a gas station or auto parts store. Refill as needed.

Are There Precious Metals in Junk Cars?

You can expect to find steel, iron, and even copper in the entirety of a vehicle. But would you expect to find precious metals like gold or silver? Well, you should! All motorized commodities contain some degree of precious metal their design. Continue below to learn which precious metals are more likely to be included in the manufacturing of a vehicle, plus how you can make the most money by selling your junk car in Louisville, Kentucky.

Junk Car Precious Metals

The most common precious metals in cars are platinum, palladium, gold, and sometimes silver. The quantity and type of precious metal in your junk car will depend on several factors, namely the make and model, but also the current condition.

Silver

Silver can be found in car batteries and circuit boards. Silver-oxide batteries are used in military fleet vehicles, so it is unlikely that your junk car has precious metal in its battery. As for electronic circuit boards, newer model vehicles contain traces of silver, which can be recycled and repurposed into new commodities.

Gold

As just mentioned, automotive computers operate on electronic circuit boards that contain silver, but these circuit boards also contain gold-plated fingers. Newer model vehicles that have onboard computerized systems like GPS, navigation, stereo, Bluetooth, and even engine modules will contain these gold-plated components. Gold can also be found in car airbags, although only in trace amounts.

Platinum

Platinum isn’t just for jewelry. It is very likely that your personal vehicle contains platinum. All cars and trucks manufactured within the last three decades have a catalytic converter, which is an automotive part that filters toxic emissions generated by burning fuel. Within a catalytic converter is the catalyst, which is typically lined with platinum.

Palladium

Palladium is a metal you might’ve seen in a recent superhero movie or read in your favorite comic books. That is because palladium is a rare-occurring, exotic metal that is high in economic value, making it perfect for fantasy story lines. But the truth is, palladium is also used in the manufacturing of common automotive parts like catalytic converters. Palladium alloy made with platinum and rhodium is often used as a catalyst lining, serving as cost-effective alternative to former manufacturing methods for catalytic converters.

Do I Have to Repair My Wrecked Car?

After you get into a car accident, you will likely make a claim with your auto insurance carrier. But does this automatically require you to repair your vehicle? Auto Loans and Insurance Continuation

When making an auto accident insurance claim, you will be subjected to a few requirements, especially when it comes to repairs. If you are interested in continuing with your comprehensive or collision coverage, the insurance carrier will require you to repair your vehicle. That is because all insurance companies refuse to cover a vehicle that has endured ambiguous structural and mechanical damages.

Insurance companies also mandate repairs after a wreck if you are still paying off an auto loan on the vehicle. In fact, your lender may also require you to have the vehicle repaired, and by one of their own approved auto repair providers.

You Are Required to Repair Your Car If:

☑ You are still paying off an auto loan.
☑ There is a lien on your car.
☑ You want to stay insured.

Opting Out of a Claim

If the vehicular damage is minor enough that is does not interfere with the safety, performance, or efficiency of your car, or you do not care about aesthetics, you can choose to forgo making a claim through your insurance carrier. If you want, you can make the repairs to your vehicle on your terms, when it is economically available to you. But if you decide later on to take your car in for repairs, you will have to pay for the work out of your own pocket.

Doing Your Own Repairs

If you own your vehicle in full, you might be allowed to repair the damages yourself, that is, if you are handy in auto body work and automotive mechanics. Just be sure DIY auto work won’t void any of your current coverage. Check your policy first to see of you are allowed to perform your own repairs. If there is a lien on your car, you will not be allowed to repair it yourself.

Is your vehicle uninsured and simply too damaged to bother with repairs? Great news! Just contact GC’s Junk Cars at 502-804-5605 to sell your junk car in Louisville Kentucky for cash on the spot. We provide free junk removal too!

Continue below to learn some top reasons why Check Engine Lights come on, plus what you should do now that yours is illuminated.

Check Engine Light Basics

Also known as a Malfunctioning Indicator Lamp (MIL), the Check Engine Light is designed to do just that: indicate when there is a malfunction occurring within one of the systems in your vehicle. Is your Check Engine Light solid or flashing? In most cases, this light will illuminate in a solid orange, yellow, or amber color. If the Check Engine Light is flashing, it is typically indicative of a more serious automotive malfunction or breakdown.

Common Causes of an Illuminated Check Engine Light

In most cases, a Check Engine Light will come on because the gas cap is loose or needs replaced. So, always check this first before moving forward with diagnosing and illuminated Check Engine Light. In moderate cases, the Check Engine Light will illuminate if one of the vehicle’s internal systems is experiencing a malfunction or decline in performance. In serious cases, a Check Engine Light can come on as a result of misfiring, an overheating catalytic converter, or an internal fire hazard. In these occurrences, the MIL will generally present itself in flashing form. In rare cases, the MIL will illuminate for no reason at all.

One of top reasons why Check Engine Lights come on is because a part needs to be replaced, such as:

↔ Mass Airflow Sensor
↔ O2 Sensors
↔ Catalytic Converter
↔ Ignition Coils
↔ Spark Plugs
↔ Fuel Injectors
↔ Thermostat
↔ Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Purge Control Valve
↔ Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Purge Solenoid

How to Diagnose a Check Engine Light

There are two ways you can go about diagnosing the reason why your vehicle’s Check Engine Light came on. You can take your car into a local auto shop and have a mechanic diagnose the issue using an industry specific code reader. You can also choose to purchase your own code reader and perform diagnostics yourself. You can expect a mechanic to charge you anywhere from $75 dollars to $120 for Check Engine Light diagnostic service.

Over-the-counter code readers drastically range in price, anywhere between $25 and $800, so you have quite the selection to choose from. The pricier the device, the more accurate the readings are likely to be. Also, the more expensive code readers typically offer additional features separate from Check Engine Light diagnostics. This is why they cost more. The cheaper code readers may not provide the most accurate diagnostics, which may require you to take it in for professional service in the end. So, he was when making your purchase selection. If you are going to perform your own Check Engine Light diagnostics.

Did your Check Engine Light code results reveal that your car is totally junked? If so, trade it in for cash on the spot, then place that profit towards a new car! Should I Part Out a Junk Car or Sell it Whole?

If you have a junked vehicle in your possession, you might be ready to sell. But which selling strategy will render the highest gain? Selling your junk car as one piece, or parting it out and selling each piece individually? This decision is an important one considering it will have a major impact on your profit margin. Continue reading to learn the pros and cons of parting out a junk car, plus which auto salvage yard to trust for the fairest payouts in Louisville.

Junk Car Value

A junk car that retains all of its parts, whether working or not, will have a decent return value. The scrap metal market is good right now, so you can expect to make anywhere from $100 to $300 for your junk car. Newer model vehicles with all parts retained may render a junk car cash payout of $300 to $600. It all depends on various factors, such as the car’s make, model, condition, and location, as well as the current scrap metal prices, discretionary rates of the junk car buying company, the accuracy of your junk car appraisal, and more.

Parting Out Versus Selling Whole

Parting out a junk car and selling each individual auto part separately can certainly rake in more profits. Currently, the most valuable car parts are engines, catalytic converters, air conditioners, alternators, starters, radiators, tires, and wheels. However, there are good reasons why few people choose this approach. In order to dismantle a vehicle according to industry standards, a specific set of tools and materials are required.

Furthermore, it takes automotive acumen, skill, and training to know how to properly dismantle a car. If you are not a trained mechanic with this knowledge and equipment, you will need to hire one for the job. This costs money, usually between $500 and $1,000. This cost is deducted from the total profit you stand to make from your selling efforts.

Another downfall is the hassle. Listing, negotiating, selling, and distributing your auto parts will take a lot of time and effort. If you are not up for the job, you can hire an assistant or third-party seller to do it for you, but the key word here is hire. This costs money, which takes away from your final profit. Will the cost to hire a mechanic exceed what you will make back from your car parts? Is it cost-effective? Do I have the time to sell everything? These considerations are ones you need to make before moving forward with auto dismantling.

When you sell your junk car whole, you do not have to cover any additional expenses unless the auto salvage yard charges fees for intake or towing. It is important to choose a certified Louisville junk car buyer to avoid having to pay any such fees. A reputable cash for cars company will not charge you fees for towing, haul away, estimates, or service fees.

Are you ready to sell your car whole? Or do you want to sell some old or junked car parts? Contact GC’s Junk Cars at 502-804-5605 to sell your car for cash on the spot to a trusted Louisville junk car buyer! We offer free junk car removal in all surrounding counties.

Since the invention of the combustion engine, rust has remained a number one enemy to all motorized vehicles, or anything metal for that matter. For these reasons and more, rust is not something you want amassing on your vehicle.

Facts About Rust

You can better protect your vehicle from rust formation if you know a little bit more about rust in general. Rust is the result of exposed steel and iron combining with the oxygen and moisture in the air. Also known as oxidation, rust formation is highly damaging to metal. Over time, it can weaken metal and devalue its properties.

Rust Removal for Cars

Before getting started on your rust removal project, it is important to understand that the process is tedious and may require, depending on which option you choose, previous experience working with power tools and abrasives. The more damage your vehicle is with rust, the more invasive and complicated the project will be to remove it all. Keep these considerations in mind before attempting a rust removal job yourself. There are professionals you can hire to do it for you if you are not up for the job.

Two Ways to Remove Rust on Cars

The top two ways to remove rust on cars include using a rust remover product or a manual metal grinder. If you do not have previous experience working with electric-powered sanding tools, such as metal grinders and orbital belt sanders, it is not recommended to choose the metal grinding option.

1) Rust Remover Solution

You can purchase a variety of rust removal solutions and products at any local convenience store, department store, home improvement store, hardware store, or online retailer of sorts. You can expect to pay anywhere between $15 and $25 for a quality product, but you may be able to find smaller quantities at lower prices if you have just little rust remover on your car.

Using a rust removal solution will require you to have additional supplies, including 80 to 150 grit sandpaper, car-safe rags, and clean water for rinsing. Before applying your rust remover, you will need to sand down the affected areas on your vehicle. This will create a lot of floating debris, so be sure you take this into consideration prior to getting started.

2) Metal Grinding

It cannot be emphasized enough that it is necessary to have previous experience working in a metal grinding machine or tool before attempting it to remove the rust in your vehicle. If you do not already have a metal grinder, you can purchase one any local home improvement hardware store for hundred dollars or so. This option is mostly recommended for large rust removal needs. You will need to work the metal grinder layer by layer to remove small deposits of rust time. Then you finish the job by sanding down the treated areas with sandpaper.

Regardless of which option you choose, you will need to complete the job with body filler, primer, and exterior car paint. Again, it is recommended to have this done by professional if you are not up for the job.

Is your car or truck just too rusted to repair ? That’s okay! Just contact GC’s Junk Cars at 502-804-5605 to sell your junk car in Louisville Kentucky for cash on the spot. We provide free junk removal too!
